1. WELCOME
Jeff Watkins, UEC Chair, called the meeting to order at 12:09 p.m. Banquet tickets to be sold were distributed to the UEC Representatives present.
2. APPROVAL OF MINUTES - December 3, 2003
Motion: Paul Oestreich moved to approve the minutes. Kiran Bhayani seconded the motion. The minutes were unanimously approved.
3. PUBLICATION COMMITTEE
Sarah said the Journal is progressing. It has been a lot of work. Sarah has been selling the advertising to help pay for the Journal. Sarah is looking at a new method for next year that will make the Journal easier to publish and will fulfill its purpose for UEC. Sarah said that Jim Belshe from USPE, who is an attorney with an engineering background, agreed to be the Journal editor next year. In discussing methods for publishing the Journal next year, they came up with a method offered by Don Fulton who works for McGraw-Hill Construction Publishing. It should make life easier for us. Fund-raising and selling of ads for us would be eliminated. Mr. Fulton explained what he has to offer as follows:
His firm publishes Intermountain Contractor which publishes bidding news and A&E, the architectural and engineering quarterly magazine. They also do the Homebuilder Association publications. There are seven chapters of homebuilders which are under the Homebuilder Assocations, similar to UEC and its different member engineering societies. They provide a directory of the entire association and then directories divided up into their own chapters. They publish directories such as the Utah Contractor Directory, Idaho Construction Directory, ACEC-Colorado, etc.
They are proposing that during the E-Week time frame for 2005, they publish a directory of all of the UEC societies and their members. They would profile UEC and their societies in the front with articles and other information, and then there would be a directory in the back of all the engineers associated with us. The publication would be sent out to a much larger database than our current one of around 5,000. It would go to contractors, architects, developers, etc. as well. - 20,000+ people along with Intermountain Contractor magazine.
The cost to UEC would be nothing. They would get the advertisers. Magazines generally are half ads, half articles.
McGraw-Hill’s editors would do all the work. They would do the interviews, write the articles, sell the advertising, do the graphic design, and mail it out. Jim Belshe would direct McGraw-Hill’s team to put the Journal together. They have a lot of experience in this area.
Trudy Collins mentioned that ACEC-Utah is working with this same gentleman on a publication for their organization. The two publications would not necessarily have to be in conflict with each other. It depends on when each organization wants their publication to go out. It would probably work fine to have UEC’s publication to go out the beginning of February and ACEC’s go out the beginning of March.
The societies would have to agree to have their membership names published in the directory. They can provide the list for the directory that they are comfortable providing.
Trudy asked if it can remain just a magazine without the directory. Sarah did not explore that option because she felt the directory would be useful. Trudy feels that if UEC goes this direction with the directory, then it makes her directory redundant and she has lost her reason to do it.
It is Sarah’s understanding that our distribution would be added to Intermountain Contractor’s. Trudy said that she was told she would receive 500 to 1000 copies for ACEC to distribute on their own. Sarah should check on this to be sure that it would go out to our membership as well and the mailing will be taken care of.
It is Sarah’s understanding that she can pursue this direction, but before she signs a document with McGraw- Hill, there are some questions that still need to be answered. Each UEC representative needs to talk with his or her society about this proposal and bring any questions they would like to have addressed to our next meeting so it can be discussed.
This year’s Journal is going to the printer January 31. The mailing lists are needed ASAP!
4. FINANCIAL REPORT
Wendy passed out the latest financial report. She was not sure why there were 2 line items for business card ads. Carl explained that they were separated in the budget to show they half covered Journal expenses and half covered banquet expenses.
The societies who still need to pay their dues and Journal assessment are: AAEE, ASCE (Rick Campagna has the check), ASME (payment has been approved, we’re waiting for the check), ASQ, IESNA, SAMPE (they want to drop their membership), and SEAU. (AAEE paid after the meeting.)
Motion: Paul Oestreich moved to accept the financial report. Mike Norrie seconded the motion. The motion was unanimously approved.
5. COMMITTEE REPORTS
A. E-Week - Linda Bachmeier: Linda passed out menu options for the banquet. She will probably choose the Asiago Crusted Chicken Breast. Linda talked with Dave Bradshaw about the insurance. He said it is something we would have to pay for this year, so it would be cheaper to go through Utah Food Services and have them do that as a rider. We are in the process of obtaining a liquor license.
The proclamation signing will be next Monday at 11:00 a.m. at the Capitol (Jan. 12). Linda would like to take the opportunity to give a couple of tickets to the Governor’s Office if they would use them. We would need an RSVP if they are going to use them. The banquet tickets are available today. Rick Campagna will be in charge of the tickets. As tickets are sold, Rick will need names for table assignments and he’ll also need to know if a vegetarian meal is required. The tables seat 8 people. It was asked if we are going to sell tickets at the door. Linda does not want to offer to sell tickets at the door because it costs more to guess on the food. One or two won’t matter, but a lot causes a problem. The entertainment is lined up. Linda will start working on the program soon.
We don’t know if we have another half sponsor. CH2MHill is a half sponsor and asked that they not pay until the first of the year. Layton Construction was supposed to be the other half sponsor, but we don’t know where we are with that. Jeff was not able to get any information. Sarah has talked to them and got the feeling that they had not decided on it yet. Dale Bennett will talk with Lenard Barney about it since Lenard made the initial arrangements. The banquet is on February 26, 2004 at the Grand Hall, Union Pacific Station. Tickets prices are $35 general admissions, $17.50 for students and retired senior engineers. Rick Campagna needs a final count on tickets by February 15, 2004. Ken Randle mentioned that he was told the acoustics in the Grand Hall are terrible, so we will need a good sound system. UCLS has a sound system that they would be willing to let us borrow.
Ken said that Dave Widauf, our banquet speaker, is going to talk about re-inventing the Wright- Flyer. This Wright-Flyer that he and his students have re-invented has made over 300 flights and been flown solo by Jake Garn. It originally few in Wendover in March. He is doing a PowerPoint Presentation, so he will need a screen and a table for the laptop and projector. He is going to bring his own projector. Mike Norrie suggested that we have a big screen or multiple screens so everyone can see.
B. Fund-raising Committee - Paul Oestreich: Paul deferred to Ken Randle to report on fund- raising. A report was passed out showing a total of $5,310 in fund-raising so far. It is broken down as follows: $1,405 for scholarship, $3,650 for business card ads, and $255 for sponsor-a-student.
C. Membership Committee - Jay Nelson: Jay had nothing to report. Jeff made him aware that SAMPE wants to drop their membership.
D. Legislative Committee - Wendy Grosvenor: Wendy passed out a list of upcoming bills in the legislature that are of a technical nature in case any of them are of interest.
E. Awards Committee - Carl Cook: The packets are due this Friday. The selection committee will consist of Kiran Bhayani, Carl Cook, Jeff Watkins, Linda Bachmeier and Ken Randle. Carl intends to meet on January 28 at Van Boerum & Frank. He will send the information out to everyone a week before that. Carl needs to have 2 ½ weeks to get the plaques made. Carl has the following nominee names:
Engineer of the Year: ACEC-Utah Marvin E. Allen AIAA Steve Earl (Since Withdrawn) ASCE James R. Horrocks ASHRAE Mark E. Case IEEE W. Cleon Anderson SAME Paul C. Betts SEAU A. Parry Brown SWE Rachel A. B. McQuillen AAEE Don A. Ostler
Engineering Educator of the Year: AIAA David P. Widauf ASCE Marvin W. Halling IEEE David J. Comer USPE H. Scott Hinton
Fresh Faces in Engineering: AIAA Stephanie D. Mecham SAME Jason Lowe
Carl needs to get the pictures from Sarah to be used in the program.
Mike Brehm will take charge of doing the ACEC-Utah awards this year. ACEC-Utah has invited the Academy of Math, Engineering and Science (the charter school started by Governor Leavitt) to supply a booth at the banquet. They intend to invite some of the staff and recognize them that evening as well. They will also have a slide recognizing their Capitol Hill Engineering event.
F. Scholarship Committee - Wendy Grosvenor: Wendy has not yet received back any applications, but expects them soon. They will be meeting in a couple of weeks to make a selection.
6. OTHER BUSINESS
