WELCOME
Jeff Watkins, UEC Chair, called the meeting to order at 12:08 p.m.
2. APPROVAL OF MINUTES - September 3, 2003
Motion: Mike Norrie moved to approve the minutes. Sarah Winkler seconded the motion. The minutes were unanimously approved.
3. FINANCIAL REPORT - WENDY GROSVENOR
Wendy was not in attendance due to a deadline and asked Jeff to take over for her today. Carl Eriksson asked how the Journal assessment is done. Susan explained that 50% of it is based on membership numbers from each society and the other 50% is based on each society paying an equal amount because they receive equal benefit. Susan has done the invoices and knows the amounts. She passed around the sheet showing the amounts for the Journal assessment for each society. The Journal amount in the budget reflects a semi-commitment from a publisher based on a certain number of pages and a fixed commitment based on the number of pages for a professional graphic designer. It also includes an estimate of the mailing costs. Motion: Carl Cook moved to approve the financial report. Carl Eriksson seconded the motion. The financial report was unanimously approved.
4. COMMITTEE REPORTS
A. E-Week - Linda Bachmeier: Linda is still waiting for the 2004 artwork to show up on the E-Week website. As soon as she has that, she can get tickets printed and other things going. Linda still needs help with the following and received commitments to help as shown:
Ticket coordination: Rick Campagna Program coordination: Flower coordination: Sarah Winkler (Jeff Watkins’ wife was involved last year, so it might cost more this year.)
Sarah and Linda agreed that they would do with the bigger Journal this year what they did last year with the program insert. It would save on printing costs. Linda will call a few people to see if what she chooses for the menu is agreeable.
B. Publication Committee - Sarah Winkler: The Journal is going okay right now. Sarah would like each society to give her the name of the person responsible for that society’s article. The articles are due at our December 3, 2003 meeting or before. Sarah has the following contact information:
AAEE - Kiran Bhayani ACEC - Bob Davis AIAA - Ken Randle (he has already turned in his article) ASCE - Chris Trusty ASHRAE - ASME - should know by Friday ASQ - IEEE - Paul Oestreich for now IES - ITE - Jay Nelson SAME - they have someone, Mike Norrie will e-mail the information to Sarah SAMPE - SEAU - Carl Eriksson SWE - Rachel McQuillen will probably be writing the article UCLS - Dale Bennett USPE - Brian Crist
We are right on schedule at this point. Sarah has done a mapping out of the Journal. The AIAA article is on celebrating 100 years of powered flight. Ken has a speaker for the Banquet, Dave Widauf, who organized the making of the replica of the Wright Brothers flyer. Dave Widauf is a professor at USU. Sarah would like to use the Wright Flyer for the cover and develop some artwork based on that.
C. Fund-raising - Paul Oestreich: Paul has expanded the fund-raising list quite a bit. There are now 150 on the list, last year there were 120. We are still doing business card ads this year. They will cost $150 this year. The E-Week banquet is February 26, 2004.
We think we have two banquet co-sponsors. CH2MHill is paying $1,500. Kitchell Construction is hopefully going to also co-sponsor for $1,500. Dale Bennett said there are one or two other potential sponsors as well. Sarah asked if they would be willing to buy inside front cover or back cover ads for the Journal instead for this year. Sarah will let Dale know what the ad prices are.
Sarah would like to compare the fund-raising list with her advertising list to be sure they don’t overlap.
Jeff Watkins, Ken Randle, Linda Bachmeier, and Susan Merrill will review the fund-raising letter before it goes out.
D. Membership - Jay Nelson: Jay contacted six or seven people who hadn’t been in attendance for a while and more than half of them came today. IES’ contact is Chad Walker and ASQ’s representative is Bill Cochran.
E. Legislative - Wendy Grosvenor/Dale Bennett: Dale would like to gather some engineers’ opinions about the term “engineer” and how it should be used in Utah. He would like to compare that to other states where there is a huge fine imposed if someone claims to be an engineer but is not. In Utah it is very loose. The state is cracking down more on use of the term “Professional Engineer.” However, many people are called “Senior Engineer” who do not even have a B.S. in engineering. It seems that there should be some way of distinguishing if someone is really an engineer or not. We should be able to define it better, as the architects have for their field. It was suggested that Dale prepare an e-mail for Susan to send out soliciting opinions of the engineers in our organizations about the matter. The enforcement is there. Wayne Jeppson has been doing it and will continue to do so.
The continuing education requirement is a good shot in the arm for engineering societies and UEC. You get 6 hours if your are a member of a society. If you have an agenda like the UEC agenda, every meeting you go to with an hour long agenda also counts towards the 24 hours. You need to keep a documentation. If you sit on a board like the UEC board, it is an additional 6 hours. It seems to be pretty liberal. Sarah is going to put Julie Ott’s article on the subject in the Journal.
F. Awards Committee - Carl Cook: The deadline for names and pictures is November 15, 2003 so we can have that information for the Journal. The packets are due January 9, 2004. Wendy is not sure if ASHRAE is sponsoring the Fresh Faces award again, but Carl listed UEC as the sponsor instead. Since UEC actually went through the selection process, that is appropriate. Carl handed out the award nomination forms for all of the awards. These forms can also be obtained on the UEC website www.utahengineerscouncil.org.
Carl mentioned that we could submit the information for our Fresh Faces winner as a national nominee. The deadline is October 31, 2003. Carl will need to get the information about her. Mike Norrie will get the updated information to Carl since she is a SAME member. Carl isn’t sure yet what information he needs, but he will check on it and let Mike Norrie know. The Fresh Faces deadline is listed as December 1, 2003 on the form, but January 9, 2004 for those as well should be fine. We will still need the names and pictures by December 1, 2003 for the program portion of the Journal.
G. Scholarship Committee - Wendy Grosvenor: BYU should be receiving the scholarship this year. Linda needs to e-mail the scholarship form to Wendy.
5. OTHER BUSINESS
The information from today’s meeting can be found on the website in a few days. Also, Susan would like people to submit any announcements or events to her to post on the website.
Dale Bennett just spoke with Mike Brehm. Mike told him that we do not have a formal confirmation from Kitchell yet on the banquet sponsorship, but CH2MHill is confirmed.
The invoices for dues and Journal assessment are going out in the mail today.
Mike Norrie mentioned that SAME is bidding on their national conference which is five years out. If they win the bid, it will bring in about 1,500 engineers. They will probably know about March if they have it or not. They are competing against St. Paul and Sacramento.
6. ADJOURNMENT
Motion: Paul Oestreich moved to adjourn.
The meeting was adjourned at 1:01 p.m. |
